Traveling to Formentera; Frequently asked questions
Formentera has no airport, so the only way to access it is by sea, usually via the fast ferries that depart from the Port of Ibiza and arrive at the Port of La Savina in about 30 minutes. Once on the island, due to its compact size (barely 20 kilometers from end to end), the fastest, most comfortable, and stress-free way to explore it is by renting a motorbike or a city car, which will guarantee you total flexibility.
Although many people come for just one day from Ibiza, the ideal time to savor the true essence of the island is between 3 and 5 days. This way, you will not only be able to enjoy paradisiacal beaches like Ses Illetes or Migjorn without rushing, but you will also have time to see the craft markets of La Mola, watch the sunsets from Cap de Barbaria, and enjoy local gastronomy in the inland villages.
July and August are the most popular months with the most atmosphere, but if you are looking for tranquility, calm crystal-clear waters, and perfect temperatures for touring the island by motorbike, May, June, September, and October are extraordinary. During these mid-season weeks, occupancy is much lower, accommodation prices drop, and you can enjoy a much more untouched and authentic Formentera.
In the peak summer months, car access to the Ses Salines Natural Park (Ses Illetes) is regulated, and car parking spaces are very limited, closing when full. For this reason, the motorbike or scooter is the favorite vehicle for travelers in Formentera: motorbike access to these protected beaches is considerably cheaper, it does not suffer from the same parking capacity restrictions, and it allows for very easy parking in any corner of the island.
It depends entirely on the type of trip you are taking. A motorbike or scooter offers an unparalleled experience of freedom, is very easy to park, and is the ideal choice for couples or individual travelers. However, if you are traveling as a family, with small children, carrying a lot of luggage, or prefer to be protected from the sun on the hottest days, a compact car or a small SUV will provide the comfort, safety, and trunk space you need to move around the island's roads.
